Mild Hybridization of Turboprop Engine With High-Power-Density Integrated Electric Drives

This article shares with the aerospace community a case study of turboprop mild hybridization using recently developed integrated drive system in University Nottingham, U.K., within ACHIEVE project under EU H2020 CleanSky 2 program (project No. 737814). The enables green taxiing aircraft while on ground its engine OFF and as an electrical generator when is air. entire designed to be able integrate power auxiliary gearbox (PAGB) aircraft. Some key features include high-speed permanent magnet machine (up 14200 rpm) dual-three-phase design, silicon carbide (SiC)-based high density (11.8 kW/L for converter, 35.3 7.2 kW/kg active parts), cooling design high-temperature operation ( $>130~^{\circ }\text{C}$ ambient temperature), fault tolerance consideration dual-channel capabilities, sensorless control operational conditions. giving overview process machine, converters, drive. numerical analysis [finite element method (FEM) computational fluid dynamics (CFD)] some experimental results are presented demonstrate effectiveness desired performance system.
